Breville Smart Grinder Pro Espresso Grind Settings
Curated espresso settings from 3–15 grind setting number (LCD display) with roast-specific zones, sensitivity data, and calibration guidance.
Grind Settings by Roast Level
Recommended grind setting number (LCD display) ranges for each roast level on the Smart Grinder Pro.
| Roast | Low | Center | High | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light | 3 | 5 | 7 | C |
| Medium-Light | 5 | 7 | 9 | C |
| Medium | 7 | 9 | 11 | B |
| Medium-Dark | 9 | 11 | 13 | C |
| Dark | 11 | 13 | 15 | D |
Values in grind setting number (LCD display). Center is the best starting point; low/high represent the typical range across different beans.
Sensitivity Zones
How much shot time changes per 1 grind setting number (LCD display) step in different zones of the dial.
Fine End
BMost sensitive zone — small changes have big impact on shot time
Mid Range
BSweet spot for most espresso — moderate sensitivity
Coarse End
DLeast sensitive — larger adjustments needed to affect extraction
Tips & Quirks
Things to know about dialing in the Smart Grinder Pro.
High grind retention of approximately 3-5g in the chute and burr chamber. If you load 18g, you may only get 14-16g out on the first grind. Not suitable for single-dosing; designed for hopper-based workflow where retained grounds are flushed by subsequent doses.
Produces clumpy grounds at espresso settings due to static. Use WDT (Weiss Distribution Technique) with a needle tool to break up clumps in the portafilter before tamping for even extraction.
The 165W motor can struggle with very light roast beans at fine espresso settings. The grinder may slow down audibly or, in rare cases, stall. Medium and darker roasts grind without issue.
Stepped adjustment can leave you between ideal settings: one click too fine chokes the machine, one click too coarse gushes. The internal upper burr ring (1-10) provides micro-adjustment to bridge these gaps. Adjust dose by +/-0.5g as an alternative workaround.
The upper burr has a hidden 1-10 micro-adjustment ring (factory set to 5). To access it, remove the hopper and lift out the upper burr. Rotating the ring to a lower number shifts the entire 1-60 range finer; higher shifts it coarser. Make one step changes at a time. This effectively gives up to 600 total grind positions (60 settings x 10 micro-positions).
The grind timer uses 0.2-second increments and is programmable per brew method preset (Espresso, Filter, Percolator, Plunger). Dose consistency is better when the hopper is at least one-quarter full, as low bean weight changes flow rate through the burrs.
Also sold as the Sage Smart Grinder Pro (model BCG820 or SCG820) outside the United States. Settings, burrs, and all specifications are identical between Breville and Sage branded units.
Calibration
Unit-to-unit variance and zero-point info for the Smart Grinder Pro.
Variance
Zero Point
No user zero-point needed. Settings are fixed integers 1-60 displayed on the LCD. The grinder has an internal upper burr ring with positions 1-10 (factory default: 5) that shifts the entire grind range finer or coarser. At the same upper burr position and dial setting, output is repeatable.
Stepped mechanism with digital display means negligible drift between sessions. Over time (years), burr wear may require adjusting the internal upper burr ring to compensate. No backlash issues due to fixed detent positions.
